Smart Studios doesn’t exist anymore, but from 1983 to 2010, it was one of the most influential in the country. Founders Butch Vig and Steve Marker recorded Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and other important bands. You can still see the building where it happened, however, at 1254 East Washington Avenue. There’s no sign. It looks like any other vacant commercial building. But if you stand outside and listen, maybe you’ll hear something.
