If you’re looking for one of Madison’s most beloved winter traditions, look no further than the University of Wisconsin–Madison Winter Carnival! Hosted by the Wisconsin Union and UW–Madison student groups every February, this free, multi-day celebration brings together students, families, locals, and visitors for an unforgettable winter experience.

What is Winter Carnival?

Winter Carnival is an annual winter event series full of fun, outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and cozy indoor moments right on the Memorial Union Terrace and around UW–Madison. With more than 30 events, the Carnival blends classic Wisconsin winter festivities with fresh twists each year.

• Learn to Skate on Lake Mendota – Glide on the ice with UW RecWell experts.

• Lady Liberty Appearance – Snap photos with the famous inflatable Statue of Liberty on the ice!

• Ice Fishing & Red Bull Light The Lamp – Try new winter sports or take part in mini-games.

• Rail Jam & Snow Fortnite – Outdoor competitions and snow play for all ages.

• Cozy Indoor Activities

• Pancake Breakfast & Hot Chocolate Stands – Warm up with tasty treats.

• Floor Curling & Mario & Sonic Tournaments – Friendly competition inside the Memorial Union.

• Grounding Kit Workshop & Winter Wonderlands Arts – Make keepsakes and get creative.

• Wisconsin Union Chili Cook-Off – A taste of local flavor.
