Between my daughter and I, we could probably clothe a small village. With that being said, we have piles of clothes EVERYWHERE after laundry day. It’s not the doing of the laundry, or even folding it; but the putting away is my problem. What it comes down to, is procrastination. I’m going to share with you a few tips that have worked for me and to help motivate you to get ready for back to school and unfortunately, the end of summer.
A productive morning can look different for everyone. For some, it might mean fitting in a workout before 8 a.m., replying to emails before heading into work, doing the dishes before heading out of the house, or just sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee. According to productivity coach Alexis Haselberger, “When your morning goes well, it creates a sense of momentum that carries you forward. Following through on your intentions brings a sense of accomplishment, which can help sustain your drive throughout the day.” So even when your morning doesn’t go so smoothly, take a moment to yourself and regroup-it doesn’t have to be a total loss for the day.
Timer Method: I’ve found that a timer works wonders in my house. You would be surprised how fast 10 goes by and how much you can accomplish in that time. Still motivated? Set it for another 10 minutes, etc.
4 C’s: Clear out, categorize, cut out and contain. This is an easy way to break down a project into manageable parts. Start small, as in a single drawer and gain momentum to work your way up!
-
- Clear out the space to start fresh
- Categorize everything by type
- Cut out the excess by donating, recycling or tossing whatever you don’t need
- Finish up, by containing what is left using storage solutions that fit your space.
1-3-5 Method: 1 big task that requires more time and effort. Ex. organizing a closet (if that is too overwhelming, start with a section like organizing the shoes). 3 medium tasks that are important, but don’t take as much time. Ex. alphabetizing a bookshelf and choosing some for donation. 5 small tasks that only require a few minutes to finish. Ex. taking empty glasses and dishes to the kitchen or clearing off your nightstand. The key to this trendy method is to remember you don’t have to do it all at once. You shouldn’t feel overwhelmed by the thought of spending hours organizing. You can work yourself from using this method monthly, to weekly and then to daily, to maintaining a tidy house.
There is no need to hire a house cleaner or break the bank, dollar tree has tons of baskets and containers to help contain your similar items and keep them neat. The key to finding the motivation to clean up, is all in what works for you. If none of these ideas sound good, maybe use a combination of one or all of them?
